Deputy Chair : Irene Afful
I was born and brought up in Liverpool, where I have lived all my life. I joined Merseyside Police in February 1991 and have 13 years service to date. As a constable, I was a uniformed patrol officer for 3 years at Lower Lane Police Station before being posted to the Family Support Unit investigating child abuse.
I was promoted to Sergeant in August 1998 and posted to the Professional Standards Department. After 9 months, I was seconded onto Operation Dragon, base at Newton-Le-Willows, as part of an investigation team into a serial sex offender. I was then posted to Wirral as a patrol sergeant. I remained on the Wirral for 3 years working in various roles, Neighbourhood, Response, FSU and CMU.
I was promoted to Inspector in June 2003 and was posted to Knowsley Response at Prescot. Last month, I was seconded onto the Race Equality Scheme as Project leader, looking at monitoring and evaluating the impact of Police business/policies on minority ethnic communities and staff. I see this role as crucial in ensuring that police policies and procedures are fair and equitable to all staff and all sections of the community.
Over the next 12 months, I would like to see the BPA grow and become fully integrated into Merseyside Police. There are a lot of misconceptions and fears about what the BPA stands for and why it exists. That seems to be the case amongst minority ethnic staff as well as white staff. It is my aim to dispel these fears and misconceptions. The BPA is primarily a support association to ensure equality of opportunity for minority ethnic staff.
It is also important to me to discover what minority ethnic staff want and expect from the BPA, after all it exists to support them. This will enable the BPA to become more effective and truly representative of our staff needs. I hope to establish a BPA that is enthusiastic, effective, respected and balanced.
